Brent Holds Near $105. Goldman Says $20 of It Is Fear.“Hard choices over what to defend will increasingly have to be made.” That is how SEB analyst Bjarne Schieldrop described the choices facing Saudi Arabia this week, as Houthi attacks spread from airports to energy infrastructure. Brent crude traded near $105 a barrel Friday morning, on track for a second weekly gain. Goldman Sachs estimates that just over $20 of that price is a risk premium. Drivers are paying it at the pump. |
The Breakdown Today’s disagreement: governments are releasing reserves to push prices down; the attacks keep adding the premium back. |
| 01 | The Price Brent traded near $105.30 early Friday, down about 0.5% on the day but heading for a second weekly gain. WTI fell to around $96 after jumping more than 3% Thursday. |
| | 02 | The Premium Goldman Sachs raised its December Brent forecast to $90 from $85. It estimated a risk premium of just over $20 a barrel, per Reuters. |
| | 03 | The Response The IEA agreed Thursday to release more than 20 million barrels of diesel. Washington is weighing easier sanctions on shadow-fleet tankers. |

A Message From Our Partner Every gold rush hides a second fortune behind the first. In 1849, most of the men who raced to California for gold went home broke. The ones who got rich sold them the shovels, the blue jeans, and the whiskey. The miners were the story. The suppliers kept the money. Here’s what the headlines miss… Artificial intelligence doesn’t really run on chips. It runs on electricity… oceans of it, around the clock, more than the grid can supply. So when Big Tech can’t wait years for the grid, it does the only thing left: it builds its own power plant, on-site, next to the data center. And overwhelmingly, it burns natural gas to do it. This is already happening at a scale that’s hard to believe. On June 22, one of the largest energy companies in the world signed a 20-year deal to power a single data-center project, 2.67 gigawatts, enough for a mid-sized city. Analysts are now tracking roughly 100 gigawatts of new “behind-the-meter” gas generation lining up behind the AI buildout. That’s a New OPEC. Not a cartel in the desert, a handful of American companies that control the gas, the pipelines, and the turbines the entire AI economy now depends on. Ken Griffin, one of the sharpest investors alive, has reportedly put more than a billion dollars into exactly this corner. And, that’s the move: in a gold rush, you don’t pay gold-rush prices for the miners. You buy the shovels. There are two companies I’d call the picks-and-shovels of AI’s power supply. I’m not naming them in an email… this is precisely the kind of edge that evaporates the moment it’s in print. I put the whole case in a brand-new documentary… the New OPEC, the two power-broker plays, and the crowded “AI winners” I’d sell to fund them. That’s 6 stocks to buy. 10 to sell. The three moves that could put your family on the right side of the only fuel that matters now. Good investing, Porter Stansberry |

Paying for Risk at the PumpWhat the Headlines Lead With Most coverage this morning leads with the small daily dip. Brent slipped after reports that Washington may ease restrictions on tankers tied to sanctioned countries. The weekly picture is firmer. Brent settled at $106.65 on Monday, its highest since September 15, after Houthi drone attacks on two Saudi airports. Attacks around the Strait of Hormuz have also increased over the past 10 days, as Iran responds to a US blockade of its ports. The US-Iran war is now in its eighth month. |
A Message From Our Partner For four decades, I’ve traded oil through every boom, bust, and war. The governments of Saudi Arabia and Kuwait hired me. And right now, I’m looking at one of the biggest oil opportunities I’ve seen in 40 years, with a three-step way anyone can take advantage. |

Why a Risk Premium Matters A risk premium is the extra amount buyers pay for fear of losing supply, not for oil that is missing today. Goldman’s estimate puts that extra at just over $20 a barrel. By that math, Brent without the fear would trade closer to the mid-$80s. Governments are working on the supply side. The IEA’s diesel release adds to the record emergency reserve release pledged in March. A US crude inventory draw of about 8 million barrels last week shows how tight stocks remain. Our view: reserve releases can cap a spike, but they cannot remove a premium built on attacks. That premium fades only when the attacks do. What It Means for Your Money At the pump, the premium is already in household budgets. Regular gasoline averaged about $4.36 a gallon on Monday, $1.28 more than a year ago, per AAA. Diesel is up about $2.60. For a household that drives 1,000 miles a month in a car that gets 25 miles per gallon, $1.28 more per gallon adds about $51 a month. It is also showing up in business costs. September producer prices rose 6.3% from a year earlier, the biggest jump since 2022. For investors, high oil helps energy producers and hurts airlines, shippers and other fuel-heavy businesses. It also keeps pressure on the Fed, since energy feeds straight into inflation. |

The Day Ahead Stocks enter Friday after a steadier Thursday. The S&P 500 rose 0.33% to 7,744.06, and the Dow gained 1.08% as investors moved into health care and consumer staples. Watch Brent near $105 into the weekend. The last round of weekend attacks lifted Brent almost $2 when trading resumed on Monday. Worth watching: any decision on shadow-fleet sanctions. Easier rules would put more tankers and supply on the water, which could take some of the premium out quickly. |
Barrels are priced in dollars. The premium is priced in fear. |
