Two Governors Voted to Hike. The Stock Market Heard a Finish Line.

Warsh said the economy is not running too hot. Two of his own voters disagreed on the record. The 10-year closed at 5.02% and traded higher this morning. A hold that settled nothing now lands on top of an inflation print.

The Breakdown
Today’s disagreement: equities are pricing the hold as an ending; bonds and crude are pricing it as a pause.

01
The loud fact
The Fed held the funds rate at 3.75% to 4.00% on Wednesday. The S&P 500 closed at 7,744 and Nasdaq 100 futures sat near 29,700 this morning.
02
The quiet fact
The vote was 10 to 2. Lisa Cook and Beth Hammack both dissented, and both wanted an immediate quarter-point hike rather than a hold or a cut.
03
The anchor
Headline PCE is seen at 3.6% year over year this morning against 3.1% for core. That half-point gap is energy, and December WTI settled near $102.78.

AI Coding’s Leader Can Change With One Model Release
Microsoft, Google, Amazon, OpenAI, Anthropic and dozens of startups all sell AI that writes code, and a single release can reshuffle the order.
Bito builds for that churn. Its AI Architect gives whichever assistant a company uses, from Cursor to GitHub Copilot, a live map of how the company’s code connects. Bito sells the map to the company, so the company keeps it when its engineers switch assistants. Investors can back the neutral side of the race on Wefunder.

A Hold That Settled Nothing, and the Print That Might

The Finish Line Everyone Saw

The Fed held the funds rate at 3.75% to 4.00% on Wednesday afternoon. Warsh told the room the economy is not running too hot and gave no timing for the next move.

Equities took the hold at face value. The S&P 500 closed at 7,744 and Nasdaq 100 futures sat near 29,700 this morning. On that tape the tightening cycle is finished, and the only argument left is how fast the discount rate comes down.

Warsh gave the room very little. He described an economy that is not running too hot. He declined to put a date on the next move and left December open. A chair who says nothing leaves the market to price the silence. The three big asset classes priced it differently inside the hour. Third quarter growth is seen near 3.2% this morning, up from 2.2%. That is not the profile of an economy asking for help.

Chip names carried the tape again. Nasdaq 100 futures near 29,700 keep the index inside its October range. Amazon reports after tonight’s close, with most of the AI complex already out. For an equity book, the hold cleared the last macro obstacle of the month. The calendar from here is thin until the midterms.

The Two Votes Nobody Led With

The vote was 10 to 2. Lisa Cook and Beth Hammack both dissented, and both wanted an immediate quarter-point hike.

Two voters arguing for a hike inside a hold is the hawkish tell, and the bond market read it that way. A hold normally pulls yields down, because the risk of the next hike leaves the curve. That is not what happened. The 10-year ended Wednesday around 5.02% and traded near 5.05% this morning. Crude agreed. December WTI settled near $102.78, gold sat near $4,050 and the dollar index held at 102.2. A firm dollar usually caps a barrel priced in dollars. Crude holding here points to supply rather than currency.

What a dollar is worth is the question sitting under every number in this letter, and it is older than this Fed.
From Our Partners
We believe Executive Order 14241 has unleashed a potentially huge change to America’s money.
Republican or Democrat, whether you support or oppose Trump’s New Dollar, you could soon be using it.
If you have savings in the bank or a stock portfolio, we believe you need to understand what’s unfolding, and take specific action to prepare.
Trumps New Dollar
In Porter Stansberry’s new documentary, you’ll discover:
•
How the last time America reset its money, it minted 1,300 new millionaires a day, and why we believe what’s coming could be bigger still.
•
The 5 assets to own before America’s new money rolls out, including the one Porter would buy today for immediate exposure.
•
The critical resources Trump is moving heaven and earth to control, because America’s new money depends on it.
•
Why the U.S. government is suddenly buying ownership stakes in tiny American mining companies, a move not seen since the depths of World War II.
•
Why a single gathering of world leaders this December, at Trump’s own Miami resort, could be the moment America’s new dollar is revealed to the world as a done deal.

Where the Half Point Comes From

Headline PCE is seen at 3.6% year over year this morning, core at 3.1%. The half point between them is energy, the one input the Fed does not set.

That gap is what the two dissenters are voting on. If crude holds above $100, headline keeps running ahead of core, and December stays live whatever Warsh will not say. For your money the chain runs through the 10-year. That yield is the discount rate under long-duration equity, which is the AI complex leading this tape. A bond fund loses price as the yield rises, roughly its duration times the move. A broad index fund carries the same technology weight.

The Print at Half Past Eight

Our read is that the two dissents are the honest signal, and the equity tape heard a finish line nobody drew.

Three numbers land at 8:30 Eastern. Third quarter GDP is seen near 3.2%, after 2.2%. September core PCE is seen at 0.3% on the month and 3.1% on the year. Headline PCE is seen at 0.5% and 3.6%.

Here is the test. Headline at or above 3.6% with the 10-year holding above 5.00% says the dissenters were early rather than wrong. We would be wrong if headline prints 3.4% or below and the 10-year slips under 4.95%. The ECB decides at 2:15 Central European Time, where a hold at 2.50% is widely expected, and Amazon reports after the close.

The Fed idled at the junction yesterday while two of its own passengers shouted for the turn.
