Stocks Rallied into the Fed. Bonds and Crude Priced the Bill. The Nasdaq added 1.2% on Tuesday. The 10-year closed at 5.02%. Gold fell 0.7%. Three markets watched the same Fed meeting and came away with two different answers. Only one of them can be right about December. |
The Breakdown Today’s disagreement: stocks are pricing a finished Fed; bonds, crude and gold are pricing one with work left. |
| 01 | The loud fact The S&P 500 closed Tuesday at 7,723, up 0.6%, and the Nasdaq added 1.2% as AI names led. Chip stocks recovered from a sharp October sell-off. |
| | 02 | The quiet fact The 10-year closed at 5.02%, back above a level it spent most of last week beneath. Gold fell 0.7% to about $4,030 in the same session. |
| | 03 | The anchor Brent sits near $111, up 1.5%, while headline CPI runs at 3.7%. Energy is the largest swing factor in that print, and it is moving up. |

Advertisement Texas Cannot Connect Power Fast Enough. One Developer Is Selling Shares. ERCOT, which runs the Texas grid, reports more than 430 gigawatts of connection requests from large power users. Hardware is now the fast part of the job. American PowerGen develops natural gas power plants for that demand. Companies waiting on power may value projects where the land, permits and grid studies are already under way. The company plans 16 Texas projects, about 22 gigawatts in total. The Tape Said Two Different Things Before the BellThe Rally Everyone Watched Equities walked into the decision in a good mood. The S&P 500 closed Tuesday at 7,723, up 0.6%, and the Nasdaq added 1.2% as AI names led the move. The Fed holds at 3.75% to 4.00% this afternoon and CME pricing gives a move about a 10% chance. Warsh takes questions half an hour later. On the equity tape that is already settled business, and Tuesday was the celebration. What Three Other Markets Did The other three rooms did not agree. The 10-year closed at 5.02%, back above a level it spent most of last week beneath. Gold fell 0.7% to about $4,030 and the dollar index sat at 102.4. Rising yields with falling gold is a real-rate move. It says the market is repricing how long money stays expensive, rather than how fast the economy grows. Brent is the third vote, near $111 and up 1.5%. Washington has reportedly asked Gulf states to prepare for a possible campaign against Iran after the midterms. The dollar earns its row here too. Crude is priced in dollars, so a firm dollar usually caps the barrel. At 102.4 the dollar is not weak, and Brent is rising anyway. That makes the bid a supply story rather than a currency one. |
Paid Partnership Your Power Bill Is Funding the AI Boom The bulk order that keeps the lights on across 13 states just jumped from $2.2 billion to $14.7 billion, nearly 7x in one year, because data centers are draining the grid. There’s one energy source that runs 24/7 with no fuel, and Washington just preserved its tax credits through 2033 while terminating everyone else’s. Google signed for 15 years. Bill Gates invested $100 million. One company has spent sixty years building it. |

How a Barrel Reaches Your 401(k) Headline CPI runs at 3.7%, and energy is the largest single swing factor inside it. A barrel that keeps climbing pushes that print up, and that print is what December is argued over. From there the chain is short. A higher headline print keeps the 10-year above 5%. That yield is the discount rate every long-duration equity is valued against, which is precisely the AI complex that led Tuesday’s rally. A broad index fund carries that same technology weight, so the discount rate reaches it as well. A bond fund you hold loses price as the yield rises, roughly the fund’s duration times the move. A mortgage quote tracks the same number. The barrel does not stop at the pump. |
From Our Partners In 2022, when the Federal Reserve made its most dramatic pivot in history and the S&P lost nearly 20%, Larry Benedict didn’t lose a single trade. He knew where the money was going and positioned his readers to profit. Trump is now installing his own Fed Chair, something Wall Street is already calling a generational shift. Larry says his readers will be ready for it. |

The Two Levels That Settle It Our read is that the bond market and the barrel are the honest votes here. The equity tape is the one guessing. Three markets against one is not proof. It is the way round this usually resolves. The first test comes at 10:30 Eastern, when the EIA reports weekly inventories. A draw means commercial crude stocks fell over the week, and last week’s fell by more than 3 million barrels. A second draw with Brent above $110 puts the risk premium back in. That premium is the extra price traders pay for the chance that supply gets cut. Then two levels by Friday’s close. December WTI settling above $103, with the 10-year holding above 5.00%, would say the rally priced the wrong Fed. We would be wrong if crude settles under $99.50 and the 10-year slips back under 4.95%. In that case the equity read was early rather than mistaken. |
The rally is still dancing to a song the bond market stopped playing at five percent. |
