The Ten-Year Rose 82 Basis Points This Quarter. Confidence Fell to 2014 Levels.
Today closes the third quarter, and one number defines it. The ten-year yield jumped 82 basis points over three months, the biggest quarterly move in four years. It reached 5.278% on Tuesday. The thirty-year crossed 5.6%, a level last seen in June 2002. Against that, consumer confidence fell to its lowest since 2014 and job openings dropped more than forecast. ADP reported 90,000 private jobs this morning, against 68,000 expected.

The Breakdown
Today's disagreement: households are answering as though a downturn has started, and employers and the bond market are both answering as though it has not.

The Quarter in One Number
The ten-year yield rose 82 basis points across the third quarter. That is the biggest quarterly jump in four years. It touched 5.278% on Tuesday and the thirty-year went through 5.6%. Futures now carry close to four Fed hikes over the coming year.

What Households Said
Consumer confidence fell to its lowest reading since 2014. August job openings dropped more than forecast. The average thirty-year fixed mortgage reached 7.58% on Tuesday, the highest since November 2023.

What Employers Said
ADP counted 90,000 private jobs added in September. The consensus was 68,000. August was revised down to 36,000, so the gap is between a firm month and a weak one, not a trend.

A Message From Our Partner
Editor's Note: What if you could claim a stake in the fastest growing startup EVER with less than $50? That's what former tech executive Jeff Brown is revealing in this new presentation.
Even though this Elon Musk-backed startup has nothing to do with robots, self-driving cars, or rockets, it's growing faster than Tesla, faster than SpaceX, and even 23 times faster than Nvidia.
Dear Reader,
After taking SpaceX public in the biggest IPO ever…
Elon Musk is already working with a NEW startup that's growing faster than Tesla…
Faster than SpaceX…
And faster than any of Elon Musk's previous ventures.
And I'll also show you how to claim a stake for as little as $50.
The Wall Street Journal called this startup “the front-runner in the race for artificial-intelligence supremacy.”
So if you didn't get a chance to get into SpaceX before it went public…
This could be your next big opportunity.
We have so much to look forward to, Jeff Brown Founder & CEO, Brownstone Research

Two Economies, One Quarter
What Three Months Did to Bonds
Eighty-two basis points on the ten-year in a single quarter. To put that in scale, the whole of 2024 moved less. The thirty-year is now at a level last printed in June 2002. Back then the federal debt was a fraction of what it is today. Equities absorbed all of it. The S&P is still up for the quarter.

The Household Reading
Tuesday's confidence print was the lowest in twelve years. That is not a soft patch. That is a reading from the depths of the last decade, arriving while unemployment sits near 4%. Job openings fell by more than forecast on the same morning. And the mortgage quote reached 7.58%. Households are not reading the yield curve. They are reading their own bills, and those say something has already broken.
The Employer Reading
This morning's ADP print says the opposite. Ninety thousand private jobs against sixty-eight thousand expected. Companies that were about to stop hiring do not add that. Second-quarter growth came in at 1.5% annualised, and third-quarter estimates have been revised up, not down. Both readings are real. One comes from people who answer a survey about how they feel. The other comes from payroll files.
What Settles It
The August PCE index lands at half past eight, with headline expected at 3.7% and core at 3.3%, both unchanged. Barkin speaks at half past twelve and Cook at twenty-five past two. Micron reports after the close. Payrolls arrive Friday. Quarter-end rebalancing will muddy today's tape, so the cleaner read comes next week. Watch whether the thirty-year holds above 5.6% once the quarter-end flows clear. If it does, the 2002 comparison stops being a headline and starts being a level.

A quarter ends on a date. The repricing does not.
